4 Keys To Thriving In The Rollercoaster 20’s
As the 2024 roller coaster glides into its year-end station, unloading passengers for a short break before they jump onto the 2025 tracks, we hope you find time to rest, reflect, and recharge.
The 1900s defined their second decade as the “Roaring 20s.” In contrast, the 2000s’ second decade has often felt more like a rollercoaster, lurching forward while being flung about. Yet, for many, the silver lining lies in the wealth of experiences gained along the way.
Here are four key observations from companies that have weathered the highs, lows, twists, and turns well:
1. Have a Plan—But Stay Agile
Life rarely goes according to plan. A plan sets your ideal direction, aligning your team and enabling quicker, more purposeful action. The real secret is discernment: knowing when to tweak the plan versus when to rethink it entirely. Companies that hold their destination firm but their plans lightly tend to be the most responsive and resilient.
2. Speed is a Superpower
In today’s world, where technology and AI level the playing field of knowledge, responsiveness wins. Decision-making, one of the hardest demands on leaders, becomes crucial. Decision fatigue is real, and in leadership, the ripple effects are magnified. Companies that act decisively based on available information—and align their teams to move quickly—are difficult to catch, much less beat.
3. Invest in People
Though I admit some bias here, the correlation between investing in people and achieving success is undeniable. I once worked under a great leader who observed that in tough times, most companies cut marketing and training budgets. Instead, he increased his, reasoning that marketing got four times the attention for twice the cost, and investing in people built loyalty, drive, and productivity. Teams that feel valued and appreciated become a company’s greatest asset.
4. Focus on What You Can Control
Energy flows where focus goes. Successful companies direct their efforts toward what they can control. It’s easy to get caught up in negativity and everything that’s going wrong—but doing so is draining and unproductive. By focusing on actionable priorities and aligning team efforts around them, these companies make the most of every situation.
