Why Your Strategy Isn’t Working

Mike Clark + Why Your Strategy Isn't Working

Got a plan but no progress? Let’s unpack the three silent killers of execution—and what to do instead.

It’s easy to assume that if the plan is solid, the results will follow. But in reality, even the best strategies often stall once they hit the day-to-day reality of business.

Here’s what I’ve seen working with business owners and leadership teams across New Zealand: it’s not usually the strategy that’s broken—it’s the execution. And the three most common blockers tend to fly under the radar.

Too Much at Once

If everything’s a priority, nothing moves.
It’s tempting to tackle everything at once, especially after a big planning session. But execution demands focus. Your team can only concentrate on so many things at a time.

What to do instead:
Pick your top three strategic priorities for the next 30 days. Park the rest. “Keep the main thing the main thing”!

No Ownership

Plans often fail at the point of handover. If no one knows exactly who’s doing what by when, progress slows—and accountability disappears.

What to do instead:
Break the strategy into specific actions. Assign owners. Add timelines. Make it visible.

No Rhythm

Strategy isn’t “set and forget.” Without a consistent rhythm to check progress, celebrate wins, and troubleshoot blocks, momentum fades fast.

What to do instead:
Establish a short, sharp review rhythm—every fortnight is ideal. Keep it focused: what’s moving, what’s stuck, and what needs attention next. Remember to celebrate successes. What gets rewarded gets repeated.

Strategy Needs More Than Good Intentions

If your strategic plan lives in a folder, it’s not a strategy—it’s a wish list. Real execution happens when direction is matched by action, accountability, and rhythm.

Most businesses don’t need more ideas. They need to get moving on the ones they already have.

So here’s your challenge:

  • What’s one priority you need to drive forward this month?

  • Who owns it?

  • And when are you checking in?

Start small. Stay focused. Keep the wheels turning.

Let me know if you’d like a template to help your team track and own execution—we use one that keeps things moving without getting bogged down.
